'Eating Veggie'
Everywhere we went we found veggie restaurants. Even in MachuPicchu town there was a Govinda's!
Quinoa (pronounced kinwa), sometimes known as Andean rice, is actually a good source of protien (unlike rice) and is used extensively in Peruvian cooking. A great find for vegetarians!
Not only easier than expected, but by pure chance everywhere we stayed ... there was at least one veggie restaurant just around the corner.
In Lima there was Govinda's just a block away from the hotel. We visited when we first arrived in Lima and also twice on the way home. On the first visit I wasn't too much impressed ... the meal looked like some frozen mixed veg (zero nutritional value) cooked up a few spices, but on subsequent visits we got satisfying meals. Terry joined Debbie and I on our last visit. He seemed pretty happy.
In Cusco there was the Moni restaurant, just across the road from our hotel. We went there at least once a day. The staff were really friendly, especially Plipia who tried to teach us a bit of the old Inca Quechua language. Food and service was always fantastic! Moni website
Also in Cusco, just by the main square, was another Govinda restaurant. We found the soup really good there.
On the Inca Trail, Eber (the cook) did a fantastic job in facilitating us. Apart from the soups being luke warm a few times, the meals were great. We really appreciated being accommodated without fuss!
Also, after the trek, walking through Machu Picchu town to the hot springs, I noticed another Govinda's. Didn't have time to eat there, but looked nice from the outside!
Our conclusion is that eating vegetarian in Peru was no problem! |
